GalaxyFest is the preeminent around-the-clock multi-genre, pop culture comic con across the region. It aims to provide support to local non-profit organizations in the areas of science, technology, engineering, math, literacy and the arts. This is accomplished by reaching across the silos of business, arts and entertainment. Celebrity actors, authors, artists, producers, animators, graphic artists, vendors and more come from across the globe to educate, entertain, and inform numerous families each year. GalaxyFest’s fan base has increased, supporting Colorado Springs’ off-season businesses and economy. With an estimated attendance of 3,800 in 2017, GalaxyFest continues to entertain adults and children alike.
Beginning 2011, David and Diann Wacks had a vision to build an event to serve multiple genres and multiple cultures. By bringing all these niche worlds together they could raise the funds to provide grants or scholarships to those less fortunate within our community. Simply put, it was a dream to support literacy, arts and education across Colorado Springs.
In 2012 the vision materialized. Numerous vendors, actors, authors, artists, and science geeks from across the country came together in a town not known for big city conventions. Successfully, they merged the worlds of Science, Fantasy, Comic book heroes, Steampunk, Tesla, Horror and more. Drawing an amazing 500+ visitors in its first year, the event has now grown to an expectation of over 8,000 in its sixth year.
David, widely known and respected within the realm of “cons”, passed away in 2014. Diann continues to support not only the original mission, but the legacy of her late husband. In 2015 she partnered with local business owners and fans, Lynda Cink and Brian Swanson, to assist in keeping GalaxyFest a reality.
GalaxyFest is now introducing new relationships with non-profit organizations and businesses across an expanded Front Range. Partnerships with the Space Foundation, Elope, and Zeezo’s help make this event widely beneficial, not only to the companies and organizations, but to the community at-large. Artists and authors from Colorado Springs, Denver and surrounding areas provide panel discussions in their areas of expertise. Celebrities from locations such as Los Angeles, New York, Oklahoma, Albuquerque, and as far away as Canada have made Colorado Springs a destination and GalaxyFest a supportable cause. GalaxyFest is enlarging its economic impact by reaching out to the local business community within walking distance of the Antlers hotel in order to host special events during the event and throughout the year.
In summary, our unique orientation is our split personality and ability to materialize business relationships for the benefits of literacy and the arts. There is so much to do regardless of age. Programming, activities, events, education, vendor booths, and experience panels for children and families. Original night time events for adults gives models and performers from everywhere their opportunity to shine and maybe be “discovered.” GalaxyFest ventures into all the the Genres (SciFi, Fantasy, Anime, SteamPunk, Horror, Performing Arts, and more) and interweaves artists, authors, actors, behind-the-scenes creators, vendors, and YOU! Give it a great big shake to mix-it all up into a solid 3 day fun-filled weekend!
